Interdisciplinarity in German universities
In this study we examine the antecedents of the rise of interdisciplinary research (IDR) as well as its effects on universities. Specifically, we aim to investigate how supra-national and national funding arrangements as well as managerial pressures promote structural change in universities towards incorporation of IDR and how the organizational commitment of universities to IDR affects university level outcomes. The study will use mixed methods approach, studying policy documents, carrying out expert interviews with policy makers and managers as well as interviews with academics at selected three universities in the Ruhr area. In addition, publication and patent data will be used to understand university outcomes of IDR. The main findings of this study will provide policy recommendations for the involved universities as well as lay the foundation for a conceptual framework as well as provide pilot empirical data for the DFG research proposal.
